Do you think designers have a responsibility towards shaping our society’s conscience? How can design compel disaffected audiences to take action on social issues? How is it possible to sustain a career designing for social causes?
BETTER, the second-annual Princeton University design conference is this Saturday, February 28th. It will bring together students and practicing designers to explore these questions.
The speakers include, in addition to me and our Director of Strategy, Leland Maschmeyer:
Jessica Helfand & William Drenttel, designers, writers and partners in Winterhouse Studio
Abbott Miller, designer and partner at Pentagram
Debra Rizzi, designer and partner at Rizco Design
Jeffrey Zeldman designer and partner at Happy Cog Studios
Frankly, I’m looking forward to seeing Bill and Jessica speak. They are as provocative as they are inspiring. Just before Christmas Jessica sent me a copy of her remarkable new book, “Scrapbooks: An American History.” It was one of the most engaging and insightful design books I’ve ever read.
Check out a good story and interview with her discussing her book at Salon.com.
As for Abbot Miller, I am always moved by his work. This exhibit he is doing for the upcoming Cooper Hewitt show looks remarkable - and important.
With these people on the roster it looks like quite a promising day.
I’ll just have to pull my socks up.
